Real Betis 1-0 Feyenoord: Champions League Drama in Seville
Isco’s second-half penalty proved decisive as Real Betis ground out a 1-0 victory over Feyenoord in a tense Champions League Group Stage clash at the Benito Villamarín – a result that leaves the Dutch giants still searching for their first win in this year’s competition.
Feyenoord’s Disciplined First Half
The visitors started brightly, their 53% possession reflecting manager Van Bronckhorst’s tactical blueprint. But it was Betis who carried the sharper threat, rattling off 14 first-half shots to Feyenoord’s 5. The Dutch resistance cracked first when Mika Màrmol’s 14th-minute booking signalled a long night for Feyenoord’s backline.
Real Betis Breakthrough
The turning point came in the 59th minute – Isco showing nerves of steel to convert from the spot after Feyenoord’s Charles Vanhoutte saw yellow for the foul that conceded the penalty. Betis cranked up the pressure, their 23 total shots and 2.04 xG underlining their dominance. Claudio Bravo’s crucial double-save in the 72nd minute preserved their slender lead.
Feyenoord’s Frustration
Van Bronckhorst threw on attackers in desperation, but Betis’ backline stood firm, with Marc Bartra marshalling a defence that limited Feyenoord to just 2 shots on target all night. The Dutch side’s xG of 0.81 told the story of a blunt attacking display as their Champions League struggles continued.
What This Means
For Betis, this gritty win keeps their knockout stage hopes burning bright, their battling performance proving they can grind out results when needed. Feyenoord must regroup quickly – with no wins from three games, their European campaign hangs by a thread. The return fixture in Rotterdam now looms as a must-win encounter for the Dutch side.
