Corinthians Denied in Dramatic 1-1 Vitoria Stalemate

Corinthians 1-1 Vitoria – a pulsating Serie A clash that swung on VAR decisions, late drama, and a game of two halves at Arena Corinthians. The home side dominated possession but couldn’t turn their territorial supremacy into three precious points.

Vitoria Stun Corinthians Against the Run of Play

The first half was an exercise in frustration for Corinthians, who saw 68% possession and 12 shots yield nothing. Then, in cruel fashion, Vitoria struck on the stroke of half-time. Carlos Rene punished sleeping marking to rifle home from close range (45’+1), silencing the home crowd with the ultimate sucker punch.

Corinthians Battle Back Through Alberto Penalty

The second half sparked into life when referee Bruno Arleu pointed to the spot after a VAR check (62′), with Yuri Alberto sending Lucas Arcanjo the wrong way from 12 yards (66′). Suddenly, the Arena Corinthians shook with belief – but the hosts’ momentum was nearly undone moments later when former Manchester United man Jesse Lingard came on for his debut (79′).

Late VAR Drama Denies Corinthians Winner

Just when it seemed Corinthians might nick it, VAR chalked off a potential winner after Matheus Bidu was adjudged offside in the build-up (89′). Rodrigo Garro’s last-gasp yellow card (90’+13) summed up a night of frayed nerves, with both teams exchanging late subs but unable to find a breakthrough.

What This Result Means For Both Sides

For Corinthians, 21 shots and just 1.64 xG tells the story of a team lacking cutting edge despite their dominance. Clarence Seedorf’s men stay mid-table, their European hopes fading. Vitoria, meanwhile, will cherish a hard-fought point against the run of play – their 32% possession and five shots showcasing a classic away performance. Jair Ventura’s men edge further from the drop zone, but know they rode their luck at times.
