Malaga 2-5 Real Sociedad: La Liga Thriller Sees Visitors Dominate
The score was brutal, the execution clinical – Real Sociedad dismantled Malaga 5-2 in a La Liga masterclass that saw Mikel Oyarzabal bag a brace and the hosts’ second-half rally evaporate under a late onslaught.
Real Sociedad’s Lightning Start
Takefusa Kubo needed just 180 seconds to silence La Rosaleda, dancing past a flat-footed defense to slot home Hector Fort’s cross. The Japanese winger’s early strike set the tone, with 18-year-old Orri Steinn Óskarsson doubling the lead on 26 minutes – the Icelandic teenager’s first senior goal a dagger to Malaga hearts.
By halftime, Sociedad’s 55% possession and 12 shots told the story of dominance. Malaga’s double substitution at the break screamed desperation.
Malaga’s False Dawn
Adrian Nino’s 54th-minute strike, assisted by Pablo Martínez Andrés, sparked belief. When Martínez Andrés himself rifled home six minutes after Malaga’s second goal, the scoreline read 3-2 with 24 minutes left – the 15,000 home supporters roaring their side forward.
But hope was a fleeting visitor. Oyarzabal killed the comeback stone dead in the 67th minute, finishing Jon Martín’s pass before Gonçalo Guedes rubbed salt in wounds six minutes later. Sociedad’s xG of 2.46 proved their cutting edge – their five shots on target yielding five goals.
What This Means For Both Sides
For Real Sociedad, this was a statement. Oyarzabal’s leadership, Kubo’s creativity and Óskarsson’s emergence as a genuine threat make them dark horses for Europe. They sit pretty in the top six.
Malaga? Broken. Those two quick second-half goals paper over alarming cracks – just 45% possession, only four shots on target all game. Pablo Martínez Andrés’ goal and assist can’t mask a defense that conceded five at home. Relegation whispers will grow louder.
La Liga’s relentless pace offers no respite. Sociedad host Valencia next; Malaga travel to Girona. On this evidence, only one of these teams looks equipped to survive the grind.
