Lyon Edge Nice 2-1 in Ligue 1 Thriller

Lyon 2-1 Nice: Les Gones Fight Back in Ligue 1 Classic

Lyon overturned an early deficit and survived a late red card to edge Nice 2-1 in a thunderous Ligue 1 encounter at Groupama Stadium. The hosts showed grit to recover from Sepe Elye Wahi’s opener through goals from Pavel Šulc and Tanner Tessmann, holding firm despite Keito Nakamura’s 70th-minute dismissal.

Nice Strike First Through Wahi

The visitors silenced Lyon’s raucous home support after 18 minutes when Jonathan Clauss picked out Wahi’s darting run. The young striker finished ruthlessly past Rémy Descamps – his fourth goal in seven games threatening to continue Nice’s strong start to the season. Niels Nkounkou’s early yellow had hinted at Nice’s aggressive approach, but Lyon were struggling to contain their opponents’ fluid front three.

Lyon’s Lightning Turnaround

The game flipped in four chaotic minutes before half-time. Šulc announced himself as Lyon’s new hero in the 32nd minute, rifling home from 20 yards to level. Before Nice could regroup, Zachary Athekame’s driving run set up Tessmann to smash Lyon ahead in the 36th – the American midfielder’s first goal for the club sparking bedlam in the stands. Suddenly, Nice’s defensive solidity had evaporated under Lyon’s renewed intensity.

Red Card Drama and VAR Denial

The second half became a war of attrition as Nice probed for an equalizer. Lyon’s task grew harder when Nakamura saw red for a reckless challenge on Mohamed Amoura, who himself was booked minutes later in a fractious spell. Paulo Fonseca’s reshaped defense held firm until stoppage time, when Wahi thought he’d snatched a point – only for VAR to rule the effort out. The Nice striker’s subsequent yellow card for dissent capped a miserable end for the visitors.

Lyon’s 48% possession and fewer shots (8 to Nice’s 12) told the story of a backs-to-the-wall triumph. For Nice, the frustration of seeing their xG (1.56) match Lyon’s (1.55) without reward will linger.

What This Means for Both Teams

This was statement win for Lyon’s new era under Paulo Fonseca – overcoming adversity to climb the table. Šulc’s instant impact offers hope for their attacking future. Nice’s title ambitions take an early dent; Francesco Farioli must address their vulnerability from winning positions after dropping points for the second time this season. Both sides now prepare for midweek European commitments – Lyon in the Europa League, Nice in the Conference League – before returning to Ligue 1 action next weekend.
