Silvero Stuns as Velez Edge Gimnasia 1-0 in Tense Clausura Clash

Velez Sarsfield 1-0 Gimnasia M. – Liga Profesional Argentina Clausura

Thiago Silvero sent Fortín into delirium with an 85th-minute winner as Velez Sarsfield edged Gimnasia M. 1-0 in a brutal, breathless Clausura showdown that saw six yellow cards, a disallowed goal, and 62% possession dominance from the hosts. The moment Lucas Robertone’s whipped cross found Silvero’s forehead, 15,000 throats in Liniers roared themselves raw – this was more than three points, it was catharsis after 84 minutes of frustration.

Velez Sarsfield’s Relentless Pressure

From the first whistle, Guillermo Barros Schelotto’s men turned the screws. Robertone and Manuel Lanzini pulled strings in midfield, racking up 12 corners by the hour mark. Yet Gimnasia’s backline held firm, with Cristian Rigamonti making five saves – none better than his 63rd-minute reflex stop to deny Ronaldo Martínez. When Facundo Lencioni thought he’d given Gimnasia a 10th-minute lead, VAR intervened – a decision that left visiting boss Diego Franco apoplectic on the touchline.

Gimnasia M.’s Disciplined Resistance

The visitors absorbed 20 shots but nearly nicked it themselves. Fermin Antonini’s 25-yard rocket forced Tomás Marchiori into a flying save at 1-0, moments before Velez’s winner. Diego Franco’s triple substitution on 70 minutes almost paid dividends, with Santiago Rodríguez immediately testing Marchiori. But as yellow cards piled up for Luciano Paredes and Antonini, their resistance frayed. When Silvero rose highest from Robertone’s delivery, Gimnasia’s wall finally crumbled.

What This Means for Both Sides

For Velez, this smash-and-grab keeps their Clausura dreams alive – six wins from eight now, with Silvero emerging as an unlikely hero. But Schelotto will worry about four yellows, including Lanzini’s 60th-minute booking that rules him out next week. Gimnasia’s 38% possession tells a story of heroic containment undone by one moment. Franco must rally his troops quickly – this defeat leaves them hovering just above relegation waters with six games left.
