Real Sociedad Take Control Early On
The Spanish side dominated possession from the outset, their 56% ball control knitting together 550 passes as they patiently probed Union’s defensive lines. The breakthrough came just seconds into the second half when substitute Benat Turrientes, fresh off the bench, pounced on a defensive lapse to slot home a clinical opener in the 46th minute.
Union St. Gilloise Fight Back
Despite going behind, Union showed remarkable resilience, racking up an impressive 16 total shots and 1.92 expected goals. They twice came close through Relebohile Mofokeng (73′) and Guilherme Henriques da Silva Carvalho (82′), but it wasn’t until the 88th minute that their persistence paid off. Substitute Sekou Abrahame Keita, thrown on late to inject pace, showed ice-cold composure to bury the equalizer and send the home crowd into raptures.
Discipline Issues for Both Sides
The match wasn’t without its feisty moments. Union’s David Hubert picked up the first yellow card in the 39th minute for a tactical foul, soon followed by teammate Nohim Chibani (58′) and Real Sociedad’s Mamadou Sarr (74′) as tensions flared in the closing stages.
