Hezze Stuns Marseille as Olympiakos Triumph 1-0 in Europa League

The Velodrome fell silent as Santiago Hezze’s 42nd-minute strike handed Olympiakos Piraeus a 1-0 victory over Marseille in a tense UEFA Europa League Group Stage clash. The Greek visitors dug deep under waves of second-half pressure to leave France with three precious points, while Marseille’s 56% possession counted for nothing when it mattered most.

Marseille’s Early Frustration Builds

For 40 minutes, the script followed Marseille’s expectations – Neal Maupay testing keeper Santiago Ortega early, Angel Gomes pulling strings between the lines. But Keyliane Abdallah’s 36th-minute yellow card for a reckless challenge on Gustavo Puerta cracked open the door. Six minutes later, Olympiakos burst through it – Chiquinho’s incisive pass finding Hezze ghosting into the box, his finish past Jelle de Lange sparking wild scenes in the away end.

Olympiakos’ Defensive Masterclass

Bruno Genesio threw on attacking substitutions – Emerson Palmieri, Amine Harit, Faris Moumbagna – but Olympiakos’ backline stood firm. Panagiotis Retsos and Leonardo Pirola repelled cross after cross, Ortega making five crucial saves including a fingertip stop from Maupay’s late header. The visitors showed their streetwise edge – Bruno Onyemaechi and Retsos picking up strategic yellows to break Marseille’s rhythm, their 44% possession belying perfect defensive organisation.

What This Means Moving Forward

For Olympiakos, this smash-and-grab win puts them firmly in the Group Stage mix – Hezze emerging as an unlikely hero. Marseille must regroup quickly; their nine corners and 11 shots yielded nothing, Geoffrey Kondogbia’s late introduction coming too late to spark a comeback. The Velodrome’s boos at full-time told the story – a night where dominance met bluntness, and resilience stole the show.
