Cherries Thrash Sturm Graz 3-0 in Europa League Rout

Bournemouth delivered a Europa League masterclass at the Vitality Stadium, dismantling Sturm Graz 3-0 in their second group stage match. The Cherries’ dominance was absolute — a statement performance that sent Austrian hopes crashing like autumn leaves in the Dorset wind.

Early Tensions Give Way to Bournemouth Control

The first half crackled with nervous energy. Evanilson’s 14th-minute booking for a lunging tackle signaled Bournemouth’s aggressive intent, while Sturm Graz’s Beganovic joined him in the ref’s book before half-time. But just as the Austrians looked set to reach the break unscathed, Evanilson redeemed himself. Adam Smith’s teasing cross found the Brazilian striker who thumped home a header in the 43rd minute, sending the home fans into raptures.

Cherries Twist the Knife in Second Half Onslaught

There was no let-up after the break. Rayan Rocha, freshly substituted on in the 70th minute, needed just six minutes to make his mark — the winger cutting inside before unleashing a vicious strike that left Khudyakov grasping at air. Sturm Graz’s frustration boiled over with Halwachs and Vallci both cautioned in quick succession as their challenge disintegrated.

The statistics told a brutal story: Bournemouth’s 23 shots to Sturm’s six, 62% possession, and a staggering 2.88 expected goals compared to the visitors’ paltry 0.37. When Álvaro Rodríguez converted a 92nd-minute penalty, it merely confirmed what everyone knew — this had been a systematic dismantling.

What This Means for Both Sides

For Bournemouth, this 3-0 victory plants them firmly in the Europa League mix, showing they can dominate continental opponents at home. Evanilson’s all-action display (a goal despite an early booking) typified their intensity. Sturm Graz meanwhile return to Austria with bruised egos — their defensive shape torn apart and just one shot on target all night. When these sides meet again in November, the Austrians face a monumental task to avoid another humiliation.
