Udol Sees Red as Lens Edge Lyon 2-1 in Ligue 1 Thriller

Lens 2-1 Lyon: Ligue 1 Drama at Stade Bollaert

Lens held their nerve despite Matthieu Udol’s late dismissal to claim a 2-1 victory over Lyon in a breathless Ligue 1 encounter at Stade Bollaert. Florian Sotoca’s first-half strike and Udol’s second-half thunderbolt proved enough, despite the defender’s red card sparking a grandstand finish that saw Khalis Merah pull one back for Les Gones.

Lens Strike First Through Sotoca

The hosts settled quickest, their high press forcing Lyon into early mistakes. The breakthrough came in the 36th minute when Sotoca – fed by Florian Thauvin’s clever reverse pass – swept home from 12 yards. Lyon’s frustrations boiled over as Abner Vinicius saw yellow for a reckless challenge, though Lens’ Jonathan Gradit would join him in the book after the break for chopping down Ernest Nuamah.

Udol’s Moment of Glory and Despair

Just as Lyon threatened to build momentum, Udol doubled Lens’ lead in spectacular fashion in the 76th minute. Thauvin turned provider again, whipping in a corner that Udol met with a thunderous header past a helpless Daniel Greif. But joy turned to anguish eight minutes later when Udol lunged into Pavel Šulc, earning a straight red that left Lens clinging on.

Lyon’s Late Rally Falls Short

Merah’s 85th-minute strike – a deflected effort that wrong-footed Richert Risser – set up a frantic finale. Lens dug deep, their 48% possession and 13 fouls testament to the dirty work required. Lyon threw everything forward, but Paulo Fonseca’s side couldn’t breach a makeshift backline now marshalled by substitute Samson Baidoo.

What This Means for Both Sides

For Lens, this gritty triumph – built on 7 shots on target and relentless second balls – propels them up the table, proving they can grind results without sparkling. Lyon’s wastefulness (just 5 shots on target from 52% possession) leaves them ruing missed chances. Both now face crucial midweek fixtures knowing momentum in Ligue 1’s packed midtable is everything.
