Martínez Seals Racing’s Gritty 2-1 Win in Rio Cuarto

Estudiantes de Rio Cuarto 1-2 Racing Club: Clausura Drama Unfolds

Racing Club clung on for a vital 2-1 away victory over Estudiantes de Rio Cuarto in a pulsating Liga Profesional Argentina Clausura encounter, surviving a late onslaught after Adrián Martínez looked to have sealed it. The visitors struck early through Tomás Conechny before Martínez doubled their lead, only for substitute Mauro Valiente to ignite a frantic finale with an 88th-minute lifeline that ultimately proved too little, too late.

Racing Club’s Lightning Start

The visitors exploded from the traps, silencing Estadio Ciudad de Río Cuarto after just 10 minutes when Diego Ortegoza sliced through the defense and fed Conechny, who finished with ice in his veins. Lautaro Díaz’s 23rd-minute yellow for a cynical tug briefly checked Racing’s momentum, but their grip tightened when Martínez pounced on a defensive lapse to slot home unmarked before the break. Estudiantes’ 47% possession told the story – plenty of huffing, but no cutting edge.

Estudiantes’ Frustration Boils Over

Matias Valenti’s 67th-minute booking epitomized the hosts’ mounting frustration as they fired 10 shots but only troubled Cambeses twice. Three quick substitutions looked desperate, yet sparked belated life when Valiente nodded in Gabriel Alanis’ cross to set up a grandstand finish. Racing’s backline creaked but held, Escudero throwing his body in front of everything as the hosts won nine corners to no avail. Tello’s stoppage-time yellow for time-wasting was the final act of a masterclass in game management.

What This Means

For Ruben Forestello’s Estudiantes, this gutsy but goal-shy performance leaves them mired in mid-table – their eight shots inside the box yielding just Valiente’s late consolation. Racing’s clinical edge keeps them in title contention, Martínez now with three goals in five games. Up next? A potential season-defining derby against Independiente, while Estudiantes face a must-win at struggling Arsenal Sarandí. The late drama couldn’t mask the truth – Racing’s 53% possession and five shots on target earned three precious points.
