Ireland 2-2 Austria: Nations League Thriller Ends in Frustration

The Republic of Ireland were denied a huge Nations League victory as Austria fought back from two goals down to draw 2-2 in a pulsating League B clash at the Aviva Stadium.

Troy Parrott looked to have set Ireland on course for three precious points with a first-half brace, but Alexander Prass and Michael Gregoritsch struck in a devastating 6-minute second-half spell to break Irish hearts.

Parrott Double Lights Up Dublin

The Tottenham striker announced himself in the 12th minute, finishing clinically past Felix Wiegele after Adam Idah’s clever through ball split Austria’s defence. Just before halftime, Parrott doubled Ireland’s lead from the penalty spot, sending the Austrian keeper the wrong way after a VAR-confirmed handball.

Austria manager Ralf Rangnick reacted immediately – making three substitutions at the break including withdrawing captain David Affengruber. His tactical tweak worked as the visitors gained control with 58% possession.

Austria’s Lightning Comeback

The turning point came in the 71st minute when substitute Prass volleyed home Patrick Wimmer’s cross. VAR checked briefly for offside but confirmed the goal stood. Before Ireland could regroup, Gregoritsch punished hesitant defending to rifle home the equaliser from close range in the 77th minute.

Ireland’s James Abankwah and Ryan Manning picked up yellow cards in a frantic finale as they struggled to contain Austria’s momentum. The home side’s 42% possession and just 3 shots on target told the story of second-half domination by Rangnick’s men.

What This Means for Both Nations

For Ireland, this feels like two points dropped after leading for so long. Parrott’s brilliance deserved more, but defensive lapses proved costly against quality opposition. Austria showed why they’re Nations League promotion contenders with that clinical 6-minute burst.

Both teams remain unbeaten in League B Group 3 after three games. Ireland must quickly regroup before facing Norway next week, while Austria host Serbia in what could be a group decider.
